Entertaining Angels

Yesterday, in our adult Bible class at church, we broke into small buzz groups and surveyed the Scriptures on the subject of hospitality, the friendly reception and treatment of guests or strangers. It was a very challenging and profitable time as our minds were renewed concerning this particular application of biblical love. Below is the outline from our worksheet, which I’d encourage you to use in your small group sometime soon.

1. WHAT DO THE FOLLOWING SCRIPTURES TEACH US ABOUT HOSPITALITY?

Luke 14:12-14

Matthew 25:34-46

1 Timothy 5:9-10

Leviticus 19:9-10, 33-34

Hebrews 13:2 (Cf. Genesis 18:1-15)

2. WHAT DOES HOSPITALITY, OR THE LACK OF IT, REVEAL?

Romans 12:9-13 (note v. 10)

Compare with Philippians 2:3

3. HOW DOES HOSPITALITY RELATE TO STEWARDSHIP?

1 Peter 4:9-10

Psalm 24:1

Then follow-up with a discussion as to how to practically apply this exhortation: Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. – Hebrews 13:2
