3 Kinds of Bible Students

“Invest your time in the Bible and there is a payoff,” writes John Kohlenberger, III. How much time? Ten minutes a day for the average reader[1] will result in reading through the Bible in a year. But there are different ways to read the Bible, different attitudes and approaches, and three different kinds of students. read Bible[2]

“NASTY MEDICINE” – “To them the Word is bitter—yeeh!—but it’s good for what ails them.”

“SHREDDED WHEAT” – “To them the Scripture is nourishing, but dry. It’s like eating a bale of hay.”

“STRAWBERRIES & CREAM” – “They just can’t get enough of the stuff. How did they acquire that taste? By feasting on the Word. They’ve cultivated what Peter describes here—an insatiable appetite for spiritual truths. Which of the three types are you?”

As we begin a new year let’s think about our Bible reading habits and appetites since they will play a significant part in our spiritual growth. As John Kohlenberger writes, “The Bible was written not to satisfy your curiosity, but to help you conform to Christ’s image. Not to make you a smarter sinner, but to make you like the Savior.”

This morning, I began using this tool, which was a Christmas gift from my mother-in-law: Read through the Bible in a Year[3]. It is a chronological reading schedule from Moody Press. If you have never read through the Bible, or it’s been a while, you may want to check out this helpful little book[4].
