Love Poured Out

The Cross of Christ humbles our proud hearts and produces joyful sobriety as we ponder it as the ultimate demonstration of God’s love for helpless, ungodly sinners like you and me. One of the simplest, yet most profound Scripture passages that explains this is Romans 5:6-11. Take a moment to ponder it with me today.

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

While we were helpless, trapped in our sin, God loved us. Contrary to popular thought, God does not help those who help themselves. Instead He delights to help, i.e. rescue, those who are completely unable to help themselves. Apart from Jesus Christ every sinner is a spiritual corpse laying at the bottom of the ocean of sin. Apart from the grace of God there is no hope and no help.

While we were yet ungodly, in love with sin and disinterested in righteousness, God loved us. God does not wait for sinners to clean up their act before He saves them. He saves them as they are. Christ did not come to save the righteous, but to bring sinners to repentance. Christ died for us while we were still ungodly.

While we were yet His enemies, in need of reconciliation, God loved us. Born with a spiritual attachment to Adam, each of us is naturally wayward and rebellious. We are like sheep that go astray, each to our own way (Isa 53:6). It is God’s love that initiated and provided for our reconciliation—our return to Him. The death of Christ makes this possible since His blood satisfied God’s righteous requirement for an acceptable sacrifice. As a result, we are saved from the wrath of God by God himself.

Are you questioning God’s love today? Doubt no more. “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? (Rom 8:32).
