Follow One Master

To be a disciple of Jesus Christ, we must willingly leave behind all that this earthly life may promise, and choose to follow Jesus as our Lord and Master. This requires both a recognition of who Jesus is, and who we are to be, which, when properly understood, should lead to a life of obedience to God’s calling. It is these two concepts, who Jesus is, and who we are supposed to be, which are revealed in Luke 5:1-11.

The dominant theme is the Lord Jesus and what the Scriptures reveal about Him. This is to be expected since Jesus is the dominant theme of the Scriptures. However, because this account describes our Lord’s selection of his first disciples, there is a secondary theme revealed here, which is also important. It has to do with the qualities of being a disciple.

To follow Christ as a faithful disciple means you must first see Him for who He really is. You must…

CONSECRATE YOURSELF TO THE WORSHIP OF THE MASTER

  1. Jesus is truth (vv. 1-3).
  2. Jesus is sovereign (vv. 4-7).
  3. Jesus is worthy (vv. 8-10a).
  4. Jesus is evangelistic (vv. 10b-11).

But, second, following Christ as a faithful disciple also means you must…

CONCERN YOURSELF WITH THE WAY OF THE MASTER

Notice the four responses Jesus expected from those whom He called to follow Him.

  1. Listen to, and obey, the Word (vv. 1-7).
  2. Repent from sin, and turn to Christ (vv. 8-10a).
  3. Fish for lost people (v. 10b).
  4. Leave all, and follow Christ (v. 11).

As you begin a new year, consider the changes the Spirit would have you make in your relationship to Christ and the Word.
