Counseling One Another

Light after Darkness

I was recently encouraged by this poem sent to me from a friend. So, I thought I’d remember the relay races from Elementary School days and pass the encouragement on to you.

Light after darkness, gain after loss,
Strength after suffering, crown after cross.
Sweet after bitter, song after sigh,
Home after wandering, praise after cry.

… Sheaves after sowing, sun after rain,
Sight after mystery, peace after pain.
Joy after sorrow, calm after blast,
Rest after weariness, sweet rest at last.

Near after distant, gleam after gloom,
Love after loneliness, life after tomb.
After long agony, rapture of bliss!
Right was the pathway leading to this!

  1. A prayer from “The Valley of Vision” which meant much to me after the death of my husband and my adult daughter in 7 months of each other:

    The Valley of Vision

Lord, High and Holy, Meek and Lowly,
Thou hast brought me to a valley of vision,
    where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;
hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.
    Let me learn by paradox
That the way down is the way up,
that to be low is to be high,
that the broken heart is a healed heart,
That the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
That the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
That to have nothing is to possess all,
that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
That to give is to receive,
that the valley is the place of vision.

    Lord, in the daytime stars
can be seen from the deepest wells,
and the deeper the wells ,
    The brighter thy stars shine.
Let me find thy light in my darkness,
    Thy life in my death,
    Thy joy in my sorrow,
    Thy Grace in my sin
    Thy riches in my poverty,
    Thy glory In my valley.
