How to Know You Have Eternal Life
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.
1 John 5:13-15
God’s will is that you and I know for sure that we have eternal life. To know means to know in experience, not merely possess intellectual acknowledgement of facts, though historic facts are essential to the gospel. It is not mere book knowledge, but life experience that comes from having a living relationship with God–to know in one’s heart and life experience that Jesus is your Savior and Lord. This assurance is an inner peace and confidence that the Holy Spirit cultivates within us through God’s Word. It is not based on feelings or circumstances, but on the infallible promise of a faithful God who does not change. Therefore, we must look look to Scripture to grow in the confidence of your faith in Christ. God’s Word must be your ultimate authority for faith and life.
For this reason, the Spirit inspired the letter that we know of as the book of First John, to provide at least ten tests of genuine faith. A few weeks ago, we finished going through it as a congregation and we are bearing much fruit. So, I thought I’d pass on the series link to you for personal and disciple-making use. Blessings!
