Fellowship of Adoption
Continuing yesterday’s post on the privileges of adoption in Christ let’s think for a moment about the fellowship with Christ that we experience as adopted children of God and siblings of Jesus (what John Owen called ‘communion with the Son’). With the Son of God we have the following (I have added the Scripture references for deeper, thoughtful study).
- “fellowship in name; we are (as he is) sons of God” (Gal 3:26; 4:6)
- “fellowship in title and right; we are heirs, co-heirs with Christ” (Rom 8:16-17)
- “fellowship in likeness and conformity; we are predestinated to be like the firstborn of the family” (Rom 8:29)
- “fellowship in honour; he is not ashamed to call us brethren” (Heb 2:11-12)
- “fellowship in sufferings; he learned obedience by what he suffered, and every son is to be scourged and received” (Phil 3:10; Heb 5:8-10; Heb 12:6-11)
- “fellowship in his kingdom; we shall reign with him” (2 Tim 2:12; Rev 20:6).
“See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are” (1 Jn 3:1).
