“Shelter in the Lord” Growth Assignment from Psalm 91

One of the most common questions I receive from blog readers has to do with counseling/discipleship “homework” or what some of us prefer to call growth assignments or growth projects.

Since many of the people we minister to are suffering in some manner, we need to ground them in the sovereign security of God as their shelter. Psalm 91 is a great place to start.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Psalm 91:1-2

Here’s a suggested growth assignment, which you could stretch out over several weeks.

  • Meditate on Psalm 91 several times. Journal about the character of God, his promises, and ways he cares for those who belong to him. Pay attention to ways you may be running to other “gods” for security.
  • Write a prayer based on the psalm, inserting the details of your particular struggle.
  • Listen to the sermon.
